Imagine this: you’re standing in the heart of Warsaw, looking up at the towering Palace of Culture and Science, and suddenly the unthinkable happens — flames burst through its windows, climbing the ornate façade as black smoke twists upward into the daytime sky. The sound of fire mixes with sirens echoing off the surrounding streets, a soundtrack of urgency and disbelief.
Around you, people don’t quite know how to react. Some stand frozen, their phones trembling as they try to capture what looks like a nightmare playing out in real time. Others stumble backward, shielding their eyes from the drifting ash. Somewhere close by, a voice cuts through the noise — a Polish bystander, their words raw and disbelieving: “O mój Boże… Co się dzieje?!” (“Oh my God… What is happening?!”). The words hang heavy in the air, perfectly capturing what everyone is thinking but cannot say.

The camera shakes as if the person holding it can’t keep their hands still, zooming in on fire devouring stone that had seemed immovable, eternal. Smoke thickens, swallowing the skyline, until all that’s left is this haunting image: a landmark that once defined the city now wrapped in fire.
And yet, as surreal and frightening as the scene feels, there’s something deeply symbolic about it. The Palace has seen wars, occupations, and upheavals. It has stood through decades of change. Fire may cover it, smoke may hide it, but the foundation still holds.
That’s the reflection to take away: life has moments where it feels like everything familiar is collapsing, where the heat and pressure seem too much to bear. But just like this building, we are built on something deeper — foundations of resilience, memory, and strength. Flames might surround us, but they do not define us. What defines us is how we endure, how we rise from the smoke, and how we carry forward despite the fire.
