Gaja’s Journey: A Young Girl’s Fight Against Severe Burns
Dear friends,
First and foremost, we want to thank every single person who has supported us so far. Your generosity has allowed Gaja to continue treatment for her very serious burns. This journey is far from over, and we know that the road ahead will be long and challenging—but we refuse to give up.
Gaja’s healing process began almost immediately after the accident. During the first year, we sought treatment at various hospitals, initially in Kraków Prokocim. While the doctors provided some guidance, much of the information was vague. We were told to use a specific brand of compression garments, which we followed diligently for about eight months.
It was through a social media group dedicated to burn survivors that we discovered Dr. Sawlewicz in Gdańsk and a different company for compression garments. This was a turning point. With their guidance, we remained under supervision longer, and after about a year and a half, the results were truly remarkable. Gaja’s scars began to show significant improvement. Her skin became more elastic, and the texture and appearance of the scars started to normalize.
Specialized Care and Early Interventions
During this time, we also took care of Gaja’s scars with specialized ointments recommended by her doctors. She was referred to a pediatric plastic surgeon in Gdańsk, who performed her first laser therapy session and a “Z” method procedure to release a scar on her forearm. Initially, we were not fully convinced about the procedure, and a follow-up appointment was postponed. Unfortunately, this meant the follow-up never took place.
Later, we learned through a television program about advanced treatments available in Sosnowiec, specifically from Dr. Bidulska. Her combined approach—CO2 laser therapy alongside collagen and steroid injections for hypertrophic scars—offered a promising new avenue for Gaja. Since starting treatment with Dr. Bidulska, we have focused exclusively on her care, and the improvements are evident.
We are aware that for Gaja, whose body is still growing, scar management will be a long-term commitment that could last until she reaches full physical maturity—approximately 18 years of age. The current therapy is producing good results: her scars are flattening, becoming more flexible, and her overall skin texture is improving.
Emerging Challenges
Unfortunately, new challenges have arisen. Gaja is now attending a psychological and pedagogical counseling center in Stalowa Wola, where she is being evaluated for possible developmental disorders. There is a suspicion of autism spectrum disorder, and she is undergoing sessions with a psychologist, sensory integration (SI) therapy, and speech therapy.
We are scheduled for further diagnostic testing at the Psychological and Pedagogical Counseling Center in Leżajsk in April 2024. This next phase will involve additional assessments, new therapies, and medical treatments. While we are hopeful that these interventions will benefit Gaja, they also come with significant financial costs.
Daily Life and Emotional Journey
Gaja is a brave, resilient child. Her childhood has been much more difficult than that of her peers. Simple tasks that most children take for granted—like playing freely, enjoying physical activities, or attending school without interruptions—require more effort and support for her. She faces challenges every day, both physically and emotionally.
Despite these obstacles, she continues to fight. Every improvement, every small milestone, is a testament to her courage and determination. Her progress is slow but steady, and we celebrate every small victory: a more flexible scar, an easier movement, a smile that shows her inner strength.
The Importance of Community Support
We would not have been able to achieve any of this without your support. Your contributions have allowed Gaja to access specialized treatments, therapies, and medical equipment that are essential for her recovery. Without your help, we would not be able to continue the fight against the long-term effects of severe burns.
As her body grows, we know the work is far from over. The journey ahead will require ongoing medical supervision, therapy, and constant care. But knowing that we are not alone in this struggle gives us strength and hope. Your continued support makes the impossible possible for our daughter.
Looking to the Future
We hope that one day, Gaja will be able to live without the limitations imposed by her injuries. We dream of a life where she can run, play, and grow like other children her age. While we cannot predict the future, we know that every effort we make today brings her closer to that goal.
To everyone who has supported us so far: thank you. Thank you for being part of Gaja’s journey, for believing in her, and for helping us provide the best possible care. We ask that you continue to stand by us, to help us face the ongoing challenges, and to give Gaja the chance to live her life as fully as possible.
Your help is not just a donation—it is a lifeline. It is hope. It is the difference between giving up and continuing the fight for a child who deserves every opportunity to heal, to thrive, and to enjoy her childhood.
"A Mother’s Fight: Graham’s Fragile Heart and Unbreakable Spirit".748

Mariah never imagined her journey into motherhood would begin with so much fear, heartache, and uncertainty. At just 18 years old, she gave birth to her first child—a beautiful baby boy she named Graham. Like any new mother, she had dreams of holding him close, watching him grow, and experiencing the sweet moments that come with raising a newborn. But life had a different plan, one that would test her strength in ways she could never have anticipated.
Shortly after his birth, doctors delivered the devastating news: Graham had a rare congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The diagnosis meant that the left side of his heart had not developed properly, leaving him critically vulnerable. Mariah barely had time to process the words before reality crashed in. At just two days old, Graham went into cardiac arrest. His tiny body fought desperately while doctors and nurses worked around the clock to save him.
Mariah could do nothing but stand by, watching through tears as machines beeped, alarms rang, and medical staff rushed in and out of the room. She whispered to her son through the wires and tubes, telling him over and over that he was loved, that he was strong, that he was not alone. Every second felt like an eternity. Miraculously, Graham pulled through that first crisis. But the battles were far from over.
In the months that followed, Graham endured more medical emergencies, including multiple open-heart surgeries. Each time, Mariah’s world seemed to stop. She never left his side—not through the nights filled with the sounds of monitors, not through the days of waiting for test results, not through the moments when she feared she might lose him forever. For 118 days, the hospital became their home. Mariah watched as her baby struggled to breathe, his tiny chest rising and falling with the help of machines. Yet even in those fragile moments, she saw a fighter in him.
Through it all, Graham showed a resilience that defied his size. There were days when his heart seemed too weak, and yet, he found the strength to keep going. There were nights when Mariah would close her eyes in exhaustion, only to wake up and find her baby still clinging to life, proving once again that he was not ready to let go.
Now, against all odds, Graham is alive. He is fragile, yes, but also thriving in his own way—slowly gaining strength, slowly learning to live with a heart that isn’t whole, but beats with courage. Every smile, every small milestone, feels like a victory not just for him but for his mother, who has carried him through the darkest of days.
Reflecting on her journey, Mariah admits that motherhood at 18 was never what she expected. “Motherhood came crashing into my life, breaking me open, teaching me a love I never knew,” she says. “I don’t know what the future holds, but together, we are learning to survive—and to hope.”
Their story is one of struggle, but also one of strength, resilience, and unshakable love. Graham may have been born with only half a heart, but with Mariah by his side, he has all the love in the world—and sometimes, that is what makes survival possible.
